what an awesomely gross week we've had!
we started off the week talking about snot! yes, snot!
we first wrote down some ideas that we wanted to know more about. like, why do we have snot? and why is snot green?
in our research, we found out that we have snot to prevent germs, dust, and pollen from getting in our lungs. we learned that if our snot is green that means we are fighting an infection and we need our snot to be clear because that means we are healthy. and we also found out that boogers are dried snot and are full of germs, dust, and pollen. so eating boogers is NOT a healthy choice!
after all that researching, we sat out to make boogers. all you need is Elmer's glue, water, Borax, and food coloring.
we also discussed what the colors of snot mean.
clear means we are healthy, yellow means keep watch, and green means we are fighting an infection.
watch this
video to learn how to make snot, too!
Tuesday, we walked to the duck pond to feed our friends. only 2 were there :(
we had our Chinese lesson with Mr. Bowen.
the students reviewed saying hello, mama, daddy, and teacher.
and also learned about the formation of Chinese letters.
Mr. Bowen showed the students how to write big and small.
we also learned all about spit! we learned another words we could use is saliva, saliva keeps our teeth clean, softens our food so we can chew and swallow it easier, and helps us taste food.
we did an experiment so the students could better understand how spit helps us taste our food.
first the students used paper towels to dry off their tongues.
then the students tasted a variety of dry foods. they discovered it's hard to chew up and swallow food because it is very dry without saliva.
then the students took a couple of sips of water to stimulate saliva production and tried the foods again, seeing that it is much easier when we have spit.
then we researched animals that spit!
we found out that llamas, archerfish, walruses, and camels spit. even if some of them only spit food or water, they can still spit! ;)
Wednesday, we started learning all about germs.
we learned that there are 4 different types of germs: bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi.
we also learned to outsmart a germ, there are 3 easy steps.
1. wash your hands.
2. cover your cough and sneeze.
3. stay home when you are sick.
the students also watched a
video of Staph Sergeant and his army of germs trying to take over the world but were foiled by PDI (Protect Don't Infect) agents!
the students also took the PDI
challenge and became PDI agents! with badges!
the students also performed a germ experiment. the students predicted which surfaces were the germiest in the classroom. to test their predictions, they rubbed white break on those surfaces.
we then sprinkled each slice with one teaspoon of water and sealed them in baggies. we placed the baggies in the windows of the science room and will check next week to see who's prediction won.

we also celebrated Malcolm's 6th birthday!!!
we had our first splash day of the summer this morning :)
and we ended the week learning about blood!
we learned that blood has four components:
1. red blood cells which carry oxygen.
2. white blood cells which fight infection.
3. platelets which helps us stop bleeding.
4. plasma which carries nutrients and proteins throughout the body.
we also learned there are 8 types of blood. we watched a really interesting and funny Bill Nye the Science Guy
video on the importance of blood.
and if your child comes home and tells you he drank blood today it's because we did! well, sort of.
all you need in 1/3 c of water, one t. chocolate syrup, 3 t. light corn syrup, and 5 drops of red food coloring.
it received mixed reviews ;)
