We spend a lot of time on the playground in the mornings enjoying the shade while we can.
We are enjoying each other's company and I love seeing all these familiar faces again. :)
We celebrated Louis' birthday with him.
3 never looked so good!
We made a KWL chart and discussed what we wanted to learn about space.
We made a Space Word Box.
And our own "life size" rocket ship!
I wrapped a Kleenex box in paper and ribbon and hot-glued bottle tops for a computer board.
Here is a baby bird I rescued and moved to another part of the playground for the mommy to find. Grady's mom helped me find out what to do and luckily the mom did come back!
Lew-E the clown was awesome!
He not only was funny and performed some awesome tricks but we learned about some other performers, as well.
We hope to see him next year at the RPTL SRP again!
Rok-E the Raccoon!
We also discussed activities we did during the day and night.
I gave each student a sun and a moon.
If it was something they did during the day, they held up a sun and vice versa.
When do you go to bed?
When do you eat breakfast?
When do you eat dinner?
When do you go to school?
and my trick question :)
When do you brush your teeth?
The students also made a Night Sky Mural.
They painted in blue, black, and gray with sponges and bath loofahs.
And added stars and moons with cookie cutters and yellow paint.
Here is Anne Sutton is the space rocket!
For our last SRP library visit :( we saw Mr. Brandon and WonderDog!
We learned how Mr. Brandon trains his labs to catch ducks, sit, etc...
And we watched them in action, too!
After learning about Neil Armstrong being the first man to walk on the moon and watching videos of that first walk, we made Martian Goop!
(1 part to 2 parts corn starch)
We also read a great book, Moonshot, by Brian Floca.
"Simply told, grandly shown, here is the flight of Apollo 11. Here for a new generation of readers and explorers are the steady astronauts, clicking themselves into gloves and helmets, strapping themselves into sideways seats. Here are their great machines in all their detail and monumentality, the ROAR of rockets, and the silence of the Moon. Here is a story of adventure and discovery -- a story of leaving and returning during the summer of 1969, and a story of home, seen whole, from far away."
To finish up our unit, we talked about the reasons why life can survive on our planet and why we cannot survive in space.
We also talked about gravity and what exactly that was.
I bought Gravity in the bookfair this week for us, so we read that and then we made Clay Creatures.
"What keeps objects from floating out of your hand?
What if your feet drifted away from the ground?
What stops everything from floating into space?
Gravity."
And for a special snack, we drank Sunshine Shakes and watched Peep's Moon Mission :)
6 oz can of unsweetened frozen oj concentrate
3/4 c milk
3/4 c water
1 tsp vanilla
