We continued our Inspiring Artists unit with a discussion on sculptures.
Sylvia Shaw Judson (1897–1978), also known as Sylvia Shaw Haskins, was an American sculptor and teacher.
She won the Logan Prize in 1929 for her sculpture "Little Gardener."
She typically used bronze, granite, and cast aluminum to make her sculptures.
After looking at "Little Gardener," we looked online at the "Rain Tree Fountain," which "is on display in the Sterling Morton Library in Illinois. A memorial to two of Joy Morton's granddaughters, this bronze-cast fountain once flowed on the grounds of The Morton Arboretum at Thornhill where the Four Seasons Garden is currently located."
We also looked at "Girl with Baby on Shoulders," which is located at the Market Square Fountain in Lake Forest, Illinois.
We also looked at a few sculptures of animals before the students began their project for the day.
I did not restrict the students to any type of animal, person, etc... and gave them complete control over what they would sculpt. We used Crayola Air-Dry Clay for this project.
we also attended Ruby Pickens Tartt Public Library for a visit with Smokey the Bear.
we learned about fire safety not only in the forest but also inside our homes.
and to finish it off, we got to give Smokey a hug or a handshake, depending on the level of braveness each had. :)
